From the production company that brought you “The Twilight Saga” films, and the studio that brings you “The Hunger Games” films, comes the first film in a new young adult feature film trilogy, “Divergent”. Auditions are now underway for the starring roles in the film, which will begin shooting March, 2013 in Chicago. “Divergent” is based on author Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name. The film will be produced and distributed by Lionsgate Studios and Summit Entertainment, who also have purchased the rights to the next two film’s in the trilogy. The film sequel will be titled “Insurgent”.
“Divergent” tells the story of a futuristic Chicago that has a population divided into factions, groups of people with unique cultural values, religions and behaviors. There are five different factions in the city: Candor (the honest), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), Dauntless (the brave, Or Tough), and Abnegation (the selfless). Abnegation is the 16-year-old protagonist Beatrice “Tris” Prior’s home faction, and is unfriendly with factions Erudite and, less so, Candor. Tris breaks free from her faction, attempting to prevent a government coup and dictatorship, while trying to figure out where a potential romance fits into her complicated life.
Golden Globe Award nominee Shailene Woodley has been cast as the film’s lead role of Tris. The Simi Valley, California native starred opposite George Clooney in the critically acclaimed 2011 film “The Descendants”. For her performance, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and won an Independent Spirit Award as well as the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Breakthrough Performance Award. People named her one of 2012 Most Beautiful at Every Age. Woodley has been nominated for six Teen Choice Awards for her role as Amy Juergens on ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”. “The Hunger Games” star Alexander Ludwig has announced that he his trying his best to land the role of Four in “Divergent”, and has had a meeting with producer Doug Wick.
Three-time Independent Spirit Awards nominee Neil Burger will direct “Divergent” from an adapted screenplay written by screenwriter Evan Daugherty. Burger has directed such films as “The Illusionist” starring Edward Norton and Jessica Biel, “The Lucky Ones” starring Rachel McAdams and Tim Robbins, and “Limitless” starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. He was set to direct the film adaptation of the video game “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” but left to direct “Divergent”. Evan Daugherty has written the screenplay for such films as “Snow White and the Huntsman” and the upcoming “Killing Season”.
Rachel Shane, Executive Vice President of Creative Affairs for Red Wagon Entertainment, will executive produce. Red Wagons’ Douglas Wick and Rachel Shane will produce. Films produced by Red Wagon include “Gladiator,” “Hollow Man II,” and “Nailed”. Also producing is Pouya Shahbazian, who heads up New Leaf’s film & television division and is the point of contact for all film, television and new media inquiries for New Leaf clients, books and projects. “Divergent” author Veronica Roth is a client of New Leaf Literary & Media.
